Comment: Portland-class heavy cruiser, CA-35. Commissioned in 1932. Indianapolis was training at Johnston Atoll Southwest of Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and participated in subsequent efforts to find the Japanese fleet. In 1945, she helped deliver atomic bomb components to Tinian island. On July 30, 1945, she was struck by torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank with heavy loss of life.
