It is the sequel to the highly successful SUPER MARIO WORLD (SNES, 1991), and is one of the most successful games in the Mario series, for its revolutionary 3-D graphics and gameplay. As such, it was re-released for the Nintendo DS handheld in 2004 (as SUPER MARIO 64 DS), with additional characters, courses, and multiplayer capability. I first had a chance to play SUPER MARIO 64 not long after its release (in 1997 or so, at a friend's house). At the time, my 11-year-old self was utterly baffled by the gameplay. (Also, I had cataracts. But that's another story altogether.) When I obtained my own Nintendo 64 sheerly by chance, 8 years ago (it was a hand-me-down from another good friend), I knew that SUPER MARIO 64 was one of the games I had to get for it. And in 2004, cartridge games were quickly disappearing from most brick-and-mortar retailers, but I managed to obtain a copy for (what I considered then) the lofty price of $20-$25. And it was worth every penny. T H E G U I D E ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ As is my wont, I downloaded a walkthrough (see section 10) to aid me and my brother in beating the game when it got difficult. Not long after, I wrote my own, in the form of a simple checklist. The purpose of this Guide is to expand upon that checklist. I am not an expert at writing game guides; my only other guide that is anywhere near complete is the SUPER METROID GUIDE (also on this site). I hope to become better at it eventually. My life is one long string of unfinished projects, and even game guides are forgotten when something new comes along. This guide, while plain-text, does rely on one or two symbols from the Windows 1252 code page; I have tested it on 4 different browsers across 3 different operating systems, and it seems to be fine. Upon arriving, however, Mario finds the castle deserted, and an evil laugh greets him with a "Bwa-ha-ha!" as he enters. Sensing Bowser's work, he finds Toad nearby, who explains that the Princess has been captured (again) and that Bowser is up to his old tricks (again): he has stolen the castle's Power Stars, and has created worlds within the paintings of the castle. Mario's mission is to recover the 120 Power Stars, beat Bowser, and rescue Peach so he can have that cake she promised. ________ ______________________________________________________________________ / IV. // C O N T R O L S & M O V E S / ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ C A M E R A S ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ SUPER MARIO 64 is a third-person platform game, with a three-dimensional environment, but is not true 3-D. (You know, like those silly movies they've been making a metric ton of lately, that I can't see because of my vision. Yes, I'm a little bitter.) Anyway, since it's third-person, there are different perspectives as compared to previous Mario games (which are 2-D sidescrollers). When you start a new game, you are introduced to your cameraman, Lakitu (a good one, as opposed to the enemy Lakitus in Courses 13 and 15), who explains how to use the different camera angles. They are: Lakitu Camera Mode: Also known as fixed-camera mode; the game is shown from Lakitu's point of view. The C< and C> buttons adjust the camera angle by 45 degrees (in most cases), and C^ and Cv zoom in and out, respectively. Good for most situations. Mario Camera Mode: Shows the game NOT from Mario's point of view, but Lakitu will move along with Mario, so that the camera angle always points in the direction Mario is facing. C< and C> don't help much, but C^ and Cv still work well enough. Good for those situations where you need to walk in a straight line without falling (on a narrow wooden plank, for example). In both modes, zooming all the way in (with C^) forces first-person perspective (i.e., Mario's point of view); however, Mario can ONLY move his head while in this mode (hence the name 'look mode'). B A S I C C O N T R O L S ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The basic controls are: A (blue) Makes Mario jump. (See SPECIAL MOVES: Jumping.) B (green) Makes Mario throw a punch or, if he's running, dive. C<, C>, C^, Cv Control the camera angle and zoom. (See previous (yellow) section.) Control Stick Moves Mario around. The more you tilt the stick, the faster Mario will run; to have him walk, tilt the stick gently. Direction Pad Does nothing (I think). L (gray) Does nothing. R (gray) Switches camera modes. (See previous section.) Z (trigger) Makes Mario crouch down. If you move the Control Stick while crouched, Mario will crawl. It has other neat uses, too--see the next section. S P E C I A L M O V E S ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Jumping ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Jump Normal jump, nothing special. If Mario is near a ledge when he jumps, he'll usually grab on (push the Control Stick forward to have Mario climb onto the ledge). Double Jump Pressing A twice in succession produces a higher jump than normal; allows Mario to reach many ledges that he otherwise could not. Side Jump A trickier move to perform, but is very useful once you learn to do it well. It is a slightly higher jump than the Backflip, but not quite as high as the Triple Jump. To perform this move, have Mario run in the direction OPPOSITE the way you want to jump, then quickly turn him around and press A. If done correctly, Mario will do what I can only describle as jumping sideways. Triple Jump Pressing A three times in succession gives Mario the highest jump he can perform (but see section 9, SECRETS), and the one that allows Wing Cap Mario to take off. Backflip Helpful in those cases where there's little room for Mario to maneuver. To do a backflip, hold the Z button, then press A. Long Jump While running, quickly press Z and A to have Mario leap forward. Wall Kick You'll have to learn this sooner or later, as it is required for at least two Stars. What it involves is having Mario jump at a wall, and then kick off of it, attaining greater height. To do it, jump at a wall (A), and just at the point of contact press A again. If done correctly, Mario will kick off the wall. With practice, many Wall Kicks can be done in succession, allowing Mario to reach great heights. A Wall Kick can be performed off a regular jump, Double Jump, or Side Jump, but not a Backflip or Triple Jump (as far as I know). Attacks ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Jump Jumping on many enemies' heads will kill them. Punch / Kick Mario's standard attack. Press B multiple times in succession to throw a second punch and finally a kick. You can also jump (with A) and kick something in midair. Grab When next to an object (e.g., a small crate) or an enemy that Mario can pick up, press B to grab it. Low Kick When standing still, hold Z and press B to do a sort of spinning kick. Overall difficulty: * The first level of the game, and the easiest. _______________________________ (1-1 | BIG BOB-OMB ON THE SUMMIT) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Simply climb to the top of the mountain and toss King Bob-omb on the ground three times. (That is, run around behind him, grab him with B, and throw him to the ground with B.) ___________________________________ (1-2 | FOOTRACE WITH KOOPA THE QUICK) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Racing Koopa the Quick is very easy for Mario, because Quick doesn't know about any of the shortcuts to the top! Even if you fall behind a little, the warp in the hole in the side of the mountain about halfway up should make for an easy win. ____________________________________ (1-3 | SHOOT TO THE ISLAND IN THE SKY) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Very simple. Talk to the Pink Bob-omb at the start, and use the cannons scattered around the level to reach the floating island. The two easiest shots are from the cannon just past the water-balloon launcher on the mountain (shoot up slightly out to the tree on the island), and the elevated cannon near the Koopa on the right side of the level (shoot straight up). __________________________ (1-4 | FIND THE 8 RED COINS) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * They are: 1) Above the elevator near the Chain Chomp; 2) On top of Chain Chomp's post; 3) On top of a steep rock to the right of Chain Chomp; 4) In the area with the Shadow Star; 5) In the area with the Shadow Star; 6) About halfway up the steep grassy slope to the left of the cannonball pit; 7) Inside the gated area with the Bob-omb; 8) Above the tree on the floating island. ____________________________ (1-5 | MARIO WINGS TO THE SKY) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** Requirements: Wing Cap. There are five rings of coins arcing out from the floating island. The object is to collect the middle coin of each; a number from 1-5 will appear for each one you successfully get. If you can get them all, a Star will appear near the Shadow Star. _______________________________ (1-6 | BEHIND CHAIN CHOMP'S GATE) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Simply stomp on Chain Chomp's post till he's free, and he'll bust open the gate with the Star behind it. ___________________ (1-7 | GET 100 COINS) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** Total coins possible: 146 Star to use: Any except #1 (so you can use the cannons) or #2 (so Quick doesn't get in the way) Key points: - Getting all 45 coins in the sky above the floating island is a tough task, but can be done, with patience. I recommend you do this FIRST, so you won't have to grab the 100-coin Star in midair and fall all the way to the ground (requiring you to get back up to the floating island). You should smack right into the pillar; climb down the pole here to reach the Star. Requirements: 10 Stars Difficulty: *** Time to tackle some more Castle Secret Stars. To enter this Course, stand where the sun is shining in the first floor entry room, switch to first-person view, and look up. This level takes place mostly in the air. The Wing Cap Switch is in plain sight on the tower below where you start. The Red Coins appear in pairs in a gradual downward spiral around the tower, and it takes a LOT of practice to get them all without messing up. If you do get them, though, you'll get a well-deserved Star. NOTE: The two lowest Red Coins are the only ones that can be reached from the tower (if you pick up a Cap there). This is helpful if you happen to miss those last two and decide to land and equip a new Cap. _____ ______________________ / C.4 \\ The Secret Aquarium \ ================================================================================ Location: First floor, Jolly Roger Bay room Requirements: 3 Stars Difficulty: * Enter the aquarium by jumping up to and through the hole on the right side of the Jolly Roger Bay room (the hole on the other side has a 1-Up). This is the only level that takes place ENTIRELY underwater; you must swim around, collecting coins to keep Mario's Power Meter filled, and collect the 8 Red Coins for an easy Star. _____ __________________ / L.3 \\ JOLLY ROGER BAY \ ================================================================================ Location: First floor Requirements: 3 Stars Overall difficulty: ** ________________________________ (3-1 | PLUNDER IN THE SUNKEN SHIP) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** This is a bit of a tricky one. Swim down to the sunken ship, and get close enough to the eel so it tries to attack you. Quickly swim to the surface, and swim back down to find that the eel has come out of the hole it was in. Swim into the hole, and you'll find some treasure chests; each contains a bubble of air that refills Mario's Health Meter, but they must be opened in the correct order, or Mario will get hurt and the chests will reset. So, upon entering, open the chests in the following order: the far one, then the one to the far left, the one to the right, and finally the one in the middle. Once you open all the chests, the water level will lower (meaning the sunken ship is rising to the surface), revealing a series of small platforms for Mario to climb to reach the Star. These can be frustrating, especially if you're a klutz like me. ___________________________________ (3-2 | CAN THE EEL COME OUT TO PLAY?) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Same deal as the previous star, except that the eel now occupies a different hole (having lost its home in the sunken ship, as the ship now floats on the surface). It is in the wall of the large underwater area below the ship; you'll know it when you see it. Anyway, bait the creature as before, and it will slowly come slithering out-- with a Star attached to its tail! The easiest time for Mario to touch the Star (causing it to detach itself) is right when it is first visible; once the eel is out in the open water, it will be harder to accurately hit the Star--the eel's tail wiggles A LOT. ________________________________ (3-3 | TREASURE OF THE OCEAN CAVE) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Down at the bottom of the large underwater area, there is a tunnel leading to a cave. In the cave, move fast to avoid the falling stone columns (stalactites?) that attempt to flatten you as you make your way toward the left. You'll see a raised platform with four treasure chests on it. As with Star #1, you must open the chests in the correct order to obtain the Star. The correct order in this case is: the one in the back, then the two in the middle, left-to-right, and finally the one in front, which causes the Star to appear. __________________________________ (3-4 | RED COINS ON THE SHIP AFLOAT) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * They are: 1) At the top of the stone pillar next to the Pink Bob-omb; 2) Inside a clamshell in a shallow part of the water; 3) Inside a clamshell in the deeper water; 4) Inside a clamshell in the deeper water; 5) Inside a clamshell near the jet stream; 6) Above the bow of the ship; 7) Above the stern of the ship; 8) Above the stern of the ship. To reach the deck of the ship, head to the tall stone platform on the right side of the level just before reaching the ship; this platform has a brown switch on it, the first we've seen in the game. Basically, brown switches cause those large, breakable tan-colored blocks to appear out of nowhere for a limited time. The blocks in question act as bridges across the narrow platforms between you and the ship. So, step on the switch and, being careful not to fall off, make your way across to the ship. (You can also reach the ship with the Cannon, but I'll leave that to you to figure out.) _______________________________ (3-5 | BLAST TO THE STONE PILLAR) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * For this Star, talk to the Pink Bob-omb on the stone platform near the start, and make your way over to the cannon, which is on a small raised platform on the left side of the level. Once in the cannon, aim for the leftmost of the tall stone pillars in the distance, and aim HIGH. (A couple inches above it should work.) If aimed correctly, when you fire, Mario will grab on to the thin part of the pillar, and you'll notice a small platform to the left. Jump off, and break the box for the Star! ____________________________ (3-6 | THROUGH THE JET STREAM) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** Requirements: Metal Cap This Star was intended for the Metal Cap, so once you've gotten that (it's in Level 6, Hazy Maze Cave), you'll be ready to do this Star. Now, there are TWO Metal Cap Blocks in this level; one in the cave, and one on the tall stone platform with the brown switch on it. For the tall platform Metal Cap: Don the Cap, hit the switch, and run toward the ship. Now, either dive (with B) or Long-Jump (Z+A) into the water. If you land on the side of the pit, jump off immediately toward the jet stream; in either case, once you land on the floor of the pit, run and/or jump like mad toward the Star in the jet stream, grabbing the Star before the Metal Cap expires. For the cave Metal Cap: Don the Cap, and run fast for the cave exit, diving or Long-Jumping into the water, and then running and/or jumping like mad toward the Star in the jet stream, grabbing the Star before the Metal Cap expires. You might not make it the first time, but that's all right; just try again. NOTE: It IS possible to reach the Star in the jet stream WITHOUT the Metal Cap, but it requires expert swimming skills that I never quite mastered. ___________________ (3-7 | GET 100 COINS) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Total coins possible: 104 Star to use: Any but #1 (so you can reach the Red Coins) Key points: - There is a Koopa shell in one of the clamshells; if you have the Metal Cap (there is a Metal Cap Block near the start), you can use the shell to surf UNDERWATER for coins, making it easier to collect the Red Coins in the clamshells in particular. - Don't forget the Red Coins (since I just mentioned them, that shouldn't be hard :P). [16] - There is a Blue Coin Block in the cave which, if you stomp it, reveals a whopping SIX Blue Coins! [30] _____ _____________________ / L.4 \\ COOL COOL MOUNTAIN \ ================================================================================ Location: First floor Requirements: 3 Stars Difficulty: *** _______________________ (4-1 | SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** This slide is more difficult than the Princess' Secret Slide, but not as tough as the one in Tall Tall Mountain. Plus, it has a secret shortcut. To get to the slide, simply jump down the chimney of the little house at the start. Upon landing, you'll see the icy slide in front of you, so jump on. There is a Blue Coin here (remember this for later), but for now focus on staying on the slide. Since this isn't a race (yet), you can pull back on the Control Stick and go as slow as you're comfortable with. After three curves (two to the right and one to the left), you'll see a line of coins angling toward the right-hand wall. If you follow them, you'll go THROUGH the wall, and onto a high-speed slide with several 1-Ups before landing in the house at the finish, where there is yet another 1-Up in a block above the narrow ledge here. Anyway, exit the house, and the Star will appear. _______________________ (4-2 | LI'L PENGUIN LOST) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * Upon reaching the bottom of the slide last Star and going outside, you may have noticed a mother penguin sitting in a pond nearby. If you talk to her, she'll tell you that her baby is missing. (The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed a baby penguin on the roof of the house down here, but it isn't hers; she'll tell you so!) So the baby penguin at the beginning of the stage is the one to bring her. The moment you pick the critter up, it will start crying, and it WILL NOT SHUT UP unless you put it down! (Annoying, huh?) Unfortunately, you cannot take the baby penguin down the underground slide, or carry it through the warp on the broken bridge, so you'll either have to slide down the snowy slope, or take a nifty shortcut. For the slope: slide all the way down, then cross the bridge (being wary of the bouncing Snowmen), and make your way down the ledges to Momma Penguin. Nifty shortcuts: A) Long-Jump off the broken bridge to the right of the start (you may lose some health, and may have to pick up the penguin again) to land next to the glass pillar, head over to the broken bridge, and jump down again, hopefully landing in the snow below, and drop off the penguin with Momma. B) Slide down the slope until just past the fenced bridge, jumping off where the slope takes a U-turn, to reach a platform with a Blue Coin Block; from there, head left to the broken bridge and jump down, hopefully landing in the snow below, and drop off the penguin. ______________________ (4-3 | BIG PENGUIN RACE) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** Well, once again you have to do the tricky slide--but this time when you jump down the chimney, there is a Big Penguin waiting there who wants to race you down the slide. It's really not that hard to beat the penguin; he may get ahead of Mario once or twice, but it's fairly easy to stay ahead of him--so long as you can stay ON the slide and don't take ANY shortcuts (I don't know if falling off the edge to a lower part of the slide counts, but I really don't want to find out). For certain, avoid the secret shortcut in the wall--if you use it, the penguin won't give you the Star because you cheated. Anyway, once you manage to beat the penguin, DON'T go out the door; talk to the penguin and he'll give you the Star right there. ______________________________________ (4-4 | FROSTY SLIDE FOR EIGHT RED COINS) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * The Red Coins are, in the order I usually collect them: 1) Above the tree at the start; 2) Next to the glass pillar near the broken bridge; 3) Above the tree near the slide exit; 4) On the edge of the level, past the L-shaped bridge; 5) In the middle of the L-shaped bridge; 6) Next to the wall at the bottom of the frosty slide; 7) At the top of the lift; 8) On the edge of the broken bridge past the bouncing Snowmen. _____________________________ (4-5 | SNOWMAN'S LOST HIS HEAD) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: * At the start, jump up to where the baby penguin is, then look to the left. Below you is a snowball on a pedestal; get closer and it'll tell you it's looking for its body, and will follow you. The challenge here is to stay ahead of the rolling snowball on the slide down, and once you make it to the snowman's body, run around behind it so that the head bumps into it. Once reunited with its body, the snowman will give you a Star. __________________________ (4-6 | WALL KICKS WILL WORK) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: ** This can be frustrating if you're not very good at Wall-Kicks. First off, go to the bottom of the level, and board the lift. About halfway up there is a little floating island to the side with a tree and a Pink Bob-omb. Jump off the lift and talk to it to open up the cannons, then wait for the lift to return (alternatively, you can leap off and hope the wind picks Mario up). Once back on land, hop into the cannon, and look for the tree on the opposite side. Aim high, with the tree just visible in the bottom of the viewport, and fire away. You should grab onto the tree; hop off and head to the right. You will find two Flower Spinners on the way (eliminate them, being wary of the narrow ledge). You'll reach an arrow made of coins; collect them, back up, and Long-Jump across the gap. To the right is the area that gives this Star its name: the Wall-Kick area. There is a spinning Heart here, and arrows on the walls indicating which way to go. A single Wall-Jump will bring Mario up to the second level, but this is where it gets hard. You must perform a DOUBLE Wall-Jump to reach the upper level with the Star; if you fail, you'll likely fall back down to the lower level and lose health (which is why the Heart is there). Once you manage to Double Wall-Jump to the top, walk SLOWLY across the icy bridge to collect the Star. ___________________ (4-7 | GET 100 COINS) ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Difficulty: *** Total coins possible: 154 Star to use: I recommend #1 or #2 (so the Big Penguin doesn't bother you on the slide) Key points: - Getting all 77 coins on the slide is VERY difficult on the first try, unless you're an expert, and not a klutz like me (who curses when he falls off the edge of the slide for the fifth time in a row). If you're good at the slide, though, remember that you can ride it as many times as you like by taking the warp on the L-shaped bridge back up to the start.
